New Modern Hotel

It was another sunday morning and another place . We stopped at the new modern hotel and I had heard rave reviews about the sambhar here . It was bustling with people and we didn’t find a table but the best part of these places is that we can share the table with others . When the agenda is gorging and walking out who cares really ;). So we shared our table with 2 others. We ordered for idli/Vada and there were loads of sambhar on the table in these utensils . Also extra sambhar was served very proactively .We also tried the kesari baath .

Idli /Vada was good, Sambhar was ok too. Nothing I fell for unfortunately . Some places have their legacy from years and may be people just love it. No reasons required .

The keshri baath was very sweet for my palette but good . Look at it, doesn’t it say it all ?

And of course this board there 😉 .I plan to visit for lunch sometime soon

Its an AYE from me , Go try!

Vishnu Thatte Idli

Another morning workout at Cubbon park and then decided to settle for Vishnu thatte idli located on old airport road, Domlur. I went there once before this however couldn’t write as the experience  didn’t manage to stay with me or was it the taste.

img_7668

It is a small outlet with mostly people picking their parcels and I seldom saw anyone eat there . It has one table in case you want to eat at the outlet. No varieties , its only idli and chutney and serve on plantain leaf on a news paper . People queued up for their orders and I saw lot of parcels being carried away . I settled for one thatte idli . The idli is thicker than any other place I have eaten so far, if you know me you do know that I love idlis . I have eaten softer, fluffier ones and the chutney is very simple and nothing to rave about in my opinion. I have tasted nicer ones and hence it is difficult to please me*facepalm*. This place has some ardent fans and I think everyone has their own likings so why not? I will revisit sometimes for sure, for no fancy breakfast , its an AYE from me . The picture above is to die for now? 🙂

Taaza Thindi

I have been told to visit Taaza Thindi by a few of you and I thought why not . We reached the place around 7.40 am this morning and it was bustling with a lot of food activities. People in beelines for their orders . A few things I noticed was the hygiene , the masks . This place has a limited menu of Chow Chow bath , idli, vada and Dosa . We ordered one plate of each and stood in the queue. Before I forget to mention they had an offer which was a coffee free 🙂

fullsizerender-3

The idlis were soaked in chutney like the other of my favourite joints. The idli’s were soft , chutney very nicely flavoured and mildly spiced . The Kharabath was delicious , a little watery but thats how I like it . The kesari bath was very sweet for my palette yet nice. The queue for Dosa was too long and the least I wanted to do was stand in a queue for over 20 mins . I got the token exchanged for idlis so didn’t try their dosas. They looked very crispy though .

fullsizerender-4

In short this place has some good breakfast and an AYE from me. Please be prepared for standing in queues . Even the dosa counter apparently belts out 30 dosas at one shot. I like these kind of joints which has a simple menu and puts all their energy in ensuring their food is good. However I would prefer a friendly staff on the other side than robots looking boys who points fingers for any question .

Try and let me know how you liked it .

Brahmins Thatte Idli

Sunday mornings for me is all about a good workout and yummilicious breakfast and it is my endeavour to find a place every sunday 🙂 . Today was Brahmins Thatte idli , located in Ashwathnagar.

fullsizerender-1

Ms. Google took me to the place and for a while I was unsure if I wanted to be a part of the food battle however mustered the courage and went to the battle ground. The queue was very badly managed . A mini stampede was what I witnessed . The swiggy boys about half a dozen in number were a part of this group waiting for their parcels so that they can vroom away. We took over 10 mins to reach the cash counter and before I realised there was a bee line behind us.

img_7444

My order was 2 thatte idlis and one chow chow bath . As the tradition in this part of Bangalore goes there is no sambhar with the order and chutney is served by a man separately outside all this cacophony . I managed to successfully get the plate of idli and chowchow bath and headed to the chutney man . One white chutney and one red was their way of serving. We walked up to the car and decided to eat and that might explain the slant in the image 🙂

The idlis were soft like jasmine flower(a saying in kannada- soft and white ), mallige hoovu in kannada and the coconut white chutney was nice. The red one was a proxy chutney whose presence or absence will make no difference in my life as it was bleh ! The chowchow bath was nicely done and kesaribath a tad sweeter than I would have liked . But if you plan to eat chowchow bath together , sweetness is not an issue . In short we liked the place and was worth the battle to try once . I am unsure of my revisit , if I do you will know 🙂 . Its an AYE ! Enjoy

Peas Upma, Uppit , Kharabath

I know , I know it may not be your favourite breakfast . It is completely dependent on how it is made in my opinion. I love eating piping hot uppit aka upma for breakfast . Matar/Peas variety is one of my favourite . I dont like the frozen peas as they never do justice to the fresh ones . So here I am sharing how I make Upma and hoping you might like it and start loving Upma like me . Oh BTW ! its a healthier option for breakfast 🙂 .

img_7237

Ingredients:

Onion- 1 medium sized

Green Chillies- 2 ( I used the extra spicy ones)

Boiled Peas- i used about 15 pods

Roasted Semolina /Rava – 1 cup

Mustard – a teaspoon

Hot water – 2.5 cups

Salt -to taste

How to make it :

Roast Rava till it turns slight brown and the raw smell of Rava vanishes

In a wok take a table spoon of oil. Add mustard and allow it to splutter then add green chillies and onions and cook well .Now add the boiled peas and stir for 2 mins . Time to add  the rava , salt and stir . Now add the hot water and stir for sometime so that no lump is formed . Close the lid and allow it to cook for 5 minutes . Serve hot Upma with lime

Notes : Rava can be roasted in Ghee for added aroma and flavour . A sprig of curry leaves and a small piece of ginger can be added for extra taste  along with onion in the beginning.  Garnish with coriander leaves

Happy Cooking!

Adigas

Sunday morning breakfast is like a ritual and most days its a planned affair. Today however it was a knee jerk reaction. We were near Adigas when we were hungry and it didn’t take us a second to decide 🙂 .

FullSizeRender-9

I ordered the classic idli (I know I said classic , doesn’t it sound uber cool?) and my friend asked for mini idlis , they should name them the minions if you ask me 😉 . After paying at the cash counter , we collected the receipt and headed to the delivery counter and that guy asked me if I wanted my idlis soaked in Sambhar and I happily nodded as that is the way I like it at Darshinis .. My friend got these mini idlis soaked in a yellow gravy loaded with ghee. I tried tasting that dish but was unsuccessful as all I could taste was ghee which I am not a fan of.

FullSizeRender-10

I love the open dosa’s at Adigas which I will order the next time , but this time was a no compliant one as always . Its an Aye from me . There are several Adigas in Bangalore , I visited the one on Ulsoor road . Simply enjoy maadi

Madurai Idli Shop

Once upon a time when Tamil style idli and sambhar was on mind I used to visit this place and somewhere had forgotten. Last Sunday when Idli’s were on my mind for brekkie the closest destination was Madurai Idli shop. So decided to park the car and walk in hoping all was the same .

FullSizeRender-18

The idlis were ok and I am unsure what the gravy is called for it surely wasn’t sambhar . I thought tomato gravy and didn’t event eat it  after tasting once ,however the guys at the service counter told me it was sambhar . Service was bad, “I dint care attitude “. I decided to eat and leave as I wasn’t planning to visit them again anyways . The idlis were cold and just ok . No spoons and the wait was unbearable .. May be expansion is not everyones cup of tea and inflation make people compromise on the quality and quantity. This is the era where chutney is more of water than flavour , whom can we blame really ? This place is a big nay! from me .. If you want to give it a try below are the details , you never know it might be your day 🙂

Oats Dosa

What to make for breakfast is a question I ask myself every morning and sometimes the previous night. Its the most important meal of the day and has to be like a King’s meal I am told . For some unknown reasons I decided to make Oats Dosa . I had not soaked any ingredients required for a regular Dosa and wanted an easy way out too hence the idea 😉 .

FullSizeRender-5

I made this in like 30 mins and wanted to share the recipe .

Ingredients :

Oats : 1 cup (put it in the mixer and powder it)

Rice flour : half cup

Roasted Rava /Semolina : Half Cup (make sure it is not roasted to brown)

Curd : half cup

Onion : 1 finely chopped

Green Chillies : 2 finely chopped

salt to taste

Water as required

Method:

Take a bowl, add oats, rice flour, rava , curd and mix. Add  water and bring it to almost watery consistency. Now add onion and chillies followed by salt and mix well. These are porous crispy dosa like the rava dosa so the consistency has to be watery. Keep it closed for about 30 mins and make Dosa’s hot . They will be crispy , delicious and healthy too :D.I like it this way , you can temper / tadka the batter with oil, peppercorns , jeera too.

 Simplest Onion Chutney

One onion and 2 green chillies (this can be added basis your liking)  grind  them with salt. It is ready .It was simple and yummy.

If you cant handle the punch raw onions and chillies bestow upon you ,add some oil to it and it immediately neutralises that flavour  .

Enjoy the dosa and let me know how you liked it 🙂

#Happy eating

#by2coffee

After a tiring run on the MG road this morning all that i wanted is some comfort food and what better than Idli :).. We decided to drive down to namma malleswaram and enjoy the piping hot idlis at by2 coffee . This is located a few meters away from Veena Stores.

For starters I ordered Idli vada and this plate(see below) cost Rs.30 , I mean isn’t this economical? They don’t have the concept of sambhar but this coconut+mint chutney is yummy . Very swift service and I didn’t take time to fetch the idli+vada combo and relish it. The idli’s melt in the mouth and this is something I cant explain but one has to relish it ..

FullSizeRender-1

While I was busy enjoying my idlis I saw a lot of them carry the uppit or kharabath and I was drawn towards the idea to try some of that too. So I got a plate of kharabath , immersed in chutney and it was delicious too. It was very different with peas and capsicum in it . What better way to begin the day than some good work out and delicious breakfast?

My friend then enjoyed ondu glass bisi bisi kaapi ..
